Art In Fashion
27.7.11
Art imitating life. Life imitating art. Many things influence art. Art has inspired many-a-things. Fashion as an art form. Art as an expressive form in fashion.
A fun new project on style bouquet.
Girl With A Pearl Earring
21.7.11
Want me to break down what Dorothee Golz did here? Sure thing. You see, she took this girl with a pearl earring painting by Johannes Vermeer and thought it was about time we looked beyond the pearl, beyond the turban and maybe beyond her intense glare. Perhaps like me, Dorothee was curious to know what this girl with a pearl was doing before posing for the painting. Inquiring minds wanted to know how this girl spent her time or quite possibly, what the rest of her surroundings look like.
So Dorothee added a body and some interior; she created a broader, wider and longer narrative. She took the girl with a pearl out of the 1800s and fast forwarded to 19th/20th century with the denim jeans and classic flats. She gave the girl with a pearl a romantic attire with the pastels and sheer, in the event she really wasn't much of a denim girl at all. Dorothee played fair and created different settings for you curious minds wondering if there was indeed more to this girl than just a pearl. And yes, yes there is a whole lot more. A lot more than I think you will find in her surroundings or her attire or even that perfectly wound turban. For you see, the story of the girl with the pearl remains in that intense gaze of hers that's filled with such captivating emotions. Dorothee felt it too and left that glare absolutely untouched.
You're welcome.
Inslee Haynes
19.7.11
I just spent the past half hour hitting backspace, clicking backspace and yeah hitting backspace again. I've been browsing through the work of Inslee Haynes, illustrator extraordinaire. Holy inspiration! Watercolor-and-ink sketches inspired by people she sees online or in person; Inslee's work has definitely egged me on to seek out pretty little dresses to wear all summer long. You may gallivant through her shop...it really is filled with the prettiest illustrations.
Vilhelm Hammershøi

I love the deep sense of calm radiating from these paintings by Vilheml Hammershøi. Perhaps a little too realistic and melancholy for some; it is this simplicity and starkness that I find most intriguing. With minimal furnishing, natural lightning and moody shadows, the Danish painter manages to speak volumes with his mostly faceless and solitary subjects.
Heather Landis: Abyss of the Disheartened
14.7.11
Heather Landis' beautiful images in the series abyss of the disheartened brings to mind the song dancing with myself by Nouvelle Vague. The Los Angeles based photographer/retoucher breathes new life into underwater photography. Sneak through some more of her work here.
I Love My City...
5.7.11
...because of the endless patios, restaurants & festivals, and because walking/biking around is not impossible. Because I don't need to travel out to experience snippets of different cultures, and because you can break into dance in the middle of the intersection while passerbys most likely only bat an eyelash...truth, first hand. Illustrator Judy Kaufmann does a brilliant job of visually articulating this love.
What do you guys love about your city? Spill.

Froschkind
29.6.11
Illustrator Sabrina Tibourtine's work is the quirkiest of them all. Pops of vibrant colour with a vintage ambiance. I love the non-perfection brought about by the combination of life photos and illustrated drawings. Her etsy shop froschkind is beyond surreal. It truly is, I promise.
Run With The Wild Horses

Tugging on my heartstrings today are these portraits by talented artist, Bec Winnel. I love her technique of piling on layers of pastel colours as it creates a soft & feminine allure. The bold, vivid eyes of her characters are filled with such emotion, book long stories could be written through those eyes alone. Absolute love.
Kristian Schuller

The Burning House

A visual articulation of what one values most or holds dear. The burning house is simple yet impactful. While profusely knocking on wood for each of you, i pose the question...if your house were burning, what would you take with you?

Happy Friday lovelies! Hope you're doing as well as can be.
I spent a chunk of yesterday morning reading the entire internet...no really, I did and here's proof. Annnnddd...through a series of link click-aging, I stumbled upon the site of the very talented Raleigh-based photographer Valerie Chiang. Her photos are filled with such mystery that leaves one with a sense of wonder and has you creating your book long stories to them. I especially love her seaside gallery and the way each picture looks more like a painting than a photograph. Talk about a day at the beach!
The Lion King Musical
7.6.11
I went to see The Lion King over the weekend, and my word, was it ever entertaining! It's one of my absolute favourite disney movies and I was curious to see how director Julie Taymor planned on bringing these characters to life without taking away from the story. The theatrics and costumes were awe inspiring and not at all distracting. And of course I sat there humming along to Circle of Life and He Lives In You.
Have any of you seen it? Highly recommended if it comes to a theatre by you. Brilliant play.
