I've Designed Films I've Never Seen

11.1.11

Kim Novak in Vertigo, Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday and Grace Kelly in Rear Window. There is much to be said about lady with 8 Oscars under her belt; not for acting, but costume design. A real life designing woman, her guiding principle was that costumes should complement, not compete with the character. Her designs are not necessarily groundbreaking, but I love that the pieces could fit in perfectly today.-decades later. Timeless. Classic. Beautiful.

Nifty Fifties

6.9.10

Women's fashion in the early 50s was characterized by good grooming and an overall tailored look that represented a quite revolution from 1940s austerity. Dior's 'New Look' comprising of a fitted jacket with a nipped in waist and a swingy mid-calf skirt is a hallmark of the period.

After watching the film Designing Woman, I have been looking around for a full mid-length skirt similar to hers. My search is still ongoing, but in the meantime I was able to rework a dress from Jacob. I paired it with a v-neck pullover and metallic platforms.

Emily from Ruby Slipper Journeys tagged me with a versatile blogger award (thanks Emily :)!) whereby I'm supposed to write seven things about myself. Well, here it goes...
  • I'm annoyingly ticklish. A pedicure is a hassle, and a massage is sadly out of the question. If you're trying to get me to do something, all you have to threaten me with is "I'll tickle you" and I'm right on it
  • It doesn't take a lot to get me laughing. I find the silliest things amusing and as a result, I spend a huge chunk of my day between giggles and laughing out loud
  • As a child I was ambidextrous, but now I'm more left-handed than right
  • I've never broken a limb, neither have I had my wisdom teeth pulled out (I consider myself fortunate since I'm terrified of pain, and the thought alone has me grimacing)
  • I love learning about new places and cultures. Although I don't plan on visiting every country in the world, my goal is pretty high up there
  • I'm not a night-out-on-the-town kind of girl. I'd much rather prefer a dinner party with good music, delicious food and great company
  • Spiritual health is a big part of my life, and in everything I do, I never want to lose sight of Him
That's all for now! Thanks for all you lovely comments. I'll be responding soon.

Hope you all had a very pleasant weekend. See you soon!

Designing Woman

14.7.10

I was up till 2 am last night. Why? I decided to catch a quick news/weather update. While flipping through the channels, I was distracted by a lady in a beautifully tailored green dresses parading back and forth on my screen. This lady turned out to be Lauren Bacall in the romantic comedy Designing Woman. TCM (Turner Classic Movies) manages to satisfy my cravings for classic films. A couple of weeks ago, they had what I choose to call a "Judy Garland marathon" where they played movie upon movie starring the wonderful actress. I curled up with my blanket and a cup of tea and took in what is probably more than the recommended dosage of tele watching (if there's ever such a thing).

Designing Woman portrays the story of Marilla Brown (Lauren Bacall), a fashion designer who meets Mike Hagen (Gregory Peck), a sports reporter while on vacation. They hit it off immediately and decide to get married, only to realize they have less in common as the days go on. If you do get the opportunity, I think you should give it a watch because I'm not doing it any justice here. It's refreshing and humorous. Besides, the clothes and style features are so beautiful, you'll be nothing short of inspired (I hope......I know that I was).

So very well put together. I love the different textures and silhouettes going on with these outfits. I believe she wore the second outfit to watch a boxing match. Her hat isjust perfectly tilted at the right angle. I would be a very proud owner of the full skirt in the second photo.

The above outfit stood out to me the most throughout the entire film. Partly because it was featured in what was possibly the longest scene, and partly because I just cannot get over the puffiness of those sleeves. Once again, the full skirt shows up here, even puffier than before.

Anyone know where I can get a skirt of this nature? Any DIY tips? It's so reminiscent of Carolina Herrera no?

Thank you all for joining in the conversation so far. You've been so lovely and generous with your words. I truly appreciate your thoughts, opinions and overall contributions. Thanks kindly :)

Hope you're having a pleasant week so far.
