The Tyranny of the Hemline

18.10.10

Mini-midi-maxi, which is the fairest of them all? In the 70s, the popularity of the mini skirt was challenged by the midi and maxi lengths. Perhaps, it was a result of the economic instability of the times. Or better yet, more women realized that there wasn't necessraily anything liberating about risking over-exposure just because you go to pick up your dropped pencil. Whatever the case may be, I'm glad there was a revival. I'm glad the midi and maxi were eventually embraced by women all over (methinks Faye Dunaway- Bonnie & Clyde anyone?- deserves some thanks).

As much as I fancy a good mini, I find a longer hemline rather flattering and of course, more practical for Fall. It is also refreshing to catch a break from excessive leg exposure brought about by denim cut-offs and barely there rompers (summer 2010, I salute you!). I love this pleated bat-print number I found a couple of weeks ago. I was so pleased with it, I crossed by fingers in hopes that it would fit, and didn't bother to try it on. If the intention was to have me go the entire day without a meal, then yes, I would say it was made with me in mind. Paired with a fitted turtleneck for an overall polished look. I would definitely wear this again (on days when I decide I'm not a fan of breathing) with a loose fitting tee, or a cropped top for a more laidback look. What do you reckon?

Hope you all had a lovely weekend. For someone who says she's not really a "concert person" (whatever that means), I managed to squeeze two in this weekend- the Drums and Gorillaz feat. N.E.R.D. If they're coming by a city near you, I would most definitely recommend both. Utterly brilliant!

Happy Monday!

Bisous,
Abi

Love your skirt. I totally agree about variable skirt lengths - it helps to mix things up and gives us alternatives. I am especially thinking this after sporting a mini today. Here's to options.

I'm with you on the longer length debate. As much as I like shorter lengths, longer ones are more practical and safer all round!!

I'm not a big fan of maxis, but I'm glad to see some longer lengths coming back. Short shorts and minis only look good on about 1% of the population, and I'm afraid I'm not in that 1%!

Awesome look, I love the length of this maxi, it's very unique. You look lovely!

I've been flirting with the idea of a midi length skirt for a while now but I'm not sure I could pull it off as well as you do! What a lovely ensemble!

Beautiful outfit. And it suits you perfectly. I'm sorry to hear that the skirt is so tight, though. It must be really small then.

Hehe! I love it when you see a vintage dress just one inch too small, and immediately plot ways to lose one inch from your waistline, solely for the sake of the dress! I would have had to buy this too, with that amazing print. Good luck with the non-breathing!

I recommend wear it with cardigan, so, you can leave a button open ;) :))

@Emily: Hahah! I know right?! Since I'm rubbish at deconstructing and re-sewing, not breathing is the next best thing!

@Ginta: Thanks for the suggestion! I could just leave the first button loose and hopefully it doesn't fall off
